    • @SoFloBuilds

      Trailers are tricky because they come in so many variations. A 13 footer is going to be way easier to find one for than mine. I would say that a Jet Ski trailer with the right bunk setup and a long tongue would work well for you. They seem to be pretty easy to come by on Marketplace. The bunks are just pressure treated 2x4s or 2x6s. The carpeting and brackets can be found on Amazon.

    Nice modifications and great videos. Suggestion - if you could attach your seat frames to the aluminum channels with corner brackets, that would really ensure an incredibly stable platform. I know in your seat-install video you indicate the seats are pretty secure between the tubes but attaching to the frames to the channels would help. Just a thought. For storage, have you ever thought about boxing in the bench seats - that is, putting 'doors' on them with say a piano hinge. Would probably help in keeping the inside of your boat organized - you could do this for the seat frames too. Again, great videos!

    • @SoFloBuilds

      Power Tilt would be awesome, but it adds a bit more weight. My motor is an Electric Start and its 135lbs. Its pretty challenging for me to take on and off by myself, which is wierd because in a Gym setting I can lift double what this weighs. Its just really awkward to grab and move. So I would need to take that into consideration as well. Get a 25 HP with Elec. Start and Tilt or a 30 HP with no frills at the same weight and price point.

      Just to clarify, the SD518 is actually 17 feet long. I know they market it as an 18, but its not. Mine are all the same length, but I dont think it would matter as long as 1. You're getting full length coverage of the floorboards, and 2. You are able to ensure that the inter floor board joints are all in or close to the center of the support beams. Meaning the strut has equal mounts of length on each side of every floor joint up to the wood panels which should be free to flex a bit.

    • @SoFloBuilds
      @SoFloBuilds Місяць тому

      What you want to make sure and do is bend the feet on the brackets so they are inset of the outer lips of the floorboards and away from the support struts. The pipes themselves are smooth and rub very minimally against the tubes as theyre pretty locked in from the pressure in the tubes. Iv'e been knocked around a ton and havent seen any wear. Make sure the seat frame and any pointy bits are clear of the tubes as well. The second bracket I bought was a little off from the first and the corner of my seat frame was too close on that one, so I shimmed it with a piece of material to protect it.

    I’ve been toying with the same type of idea… I was even thinking along the lines of replacing the sectional aluminum floor with a two piece plywood floor, fore and aft pieces instead of athwartship. Then maybe a one foot wide piece, running the full length, joining the two sides.

    • @SoFloBuilds
      @SoFloBuilds Місяць тому

      I’m not sure I would replace the aluminum with wood, if nothing else, just due to the weight. But I’m definitely going to run some aluminum stock from front to rear to stiffen the entire boat up.

    • @davehanna1557
      @davehanna1557 Місяць тому

      @@SoFloBuilds actually marine plywood would be about the same weight, on my boat the aluminum floor is 75 pounds. But running some 2” aluminum angle would do the job and be easier. Then you could easily mount to the uprighted angle…

  • @maynardharry6719
    @maynardharry6719 Місяць тому

    Hi nice video. I would definately go for the idea you have for making the floor more rigid. I have a 16ft SIB with a 60hp motor on it. Even with the stringers in the floor always flexed under power, which made the front of the boat droop (this might be what has affected your top speed, as you can't get the front of the boat out of the water). I got two 14 ft lengths of 1 inch by 1/2 inch stainless steel flat rods. I bolted them around 4 inches either side of every floor joint. Forcing the floor joints not to move or flex under power. The result is that more engine power is put through the floor (which is now super rigid) nothing moves. To be honest the bend in your floor is a defective panel, and you should get that changed, it will continue to fail even if you bend it back into shape, Because of the length of the boat the forces going through the floor are massive. I hope this helps. I can send you some pics if you think it will help.

    • @SoFloBuilds

      Hi Dave, no the keel does not have an overflow. But it’s also never exposed to the heat of direct sunlight and once in the water is cooled by the ambient water temperature. So it doesn’t have the same pressure variance risk as the other tubes.

    • @SoFloBuilds
      @SoFloBuilds 2 місяці тому

      Hi Donald, my First boat was an SD488 There’s at least one video of it on my channel, it was Red. I had it for Three years and it failed from improper storage and non use. It was an earlier model that had glued seems, so its lifespan in a tropical climate was limited to begin with. But do to unforeseen issues it sat unused for at least a year and a half. I stored it rolled up and sitting on its side in a very hot and humid garage. During its time in there it was covered with dust and water bugs. When I finally decided to unroll, wash and inflate it, it actually looked good. I went inside to get a drink and when I came back out half the seems had let go in the hot sun. I was upset, but when I actually thought about it, it was my fault. I should also mention that the seems failed, not the material itself. It’s strong as hell! If you’re going to store the boat rolled up, lay it flat and keep it in a climate controlled environment. Otherwise invest in a trailer and keep it mostly inflated (not full pressure) and out of the sun. If in a hot garage like mine, make sure it’s got some ventilation via window or vent. Open the garage every now and then to air out. Inspect the boat, tap on it to make sure it’s not too high of PSI for storage. Keep it clean and most of all, use it! It’s fun as hell and it’s very rugged, remember, you have 6 air chambers compared to my 4, you’re not going to sink, no way. You could lose half your tubes and still limp back to the dock. The safety of the boat and having the reliability of a new motor is what gives you the comfort to explore further and see more. Get a 25hp Yamaha (it’s the lightest) if you can, otherwise a Suzuki 20 is also a great choice. I have both and will be testing the 20 on mine in a future video.

      @@donaldmartin4620 Thanks for watching! Definitely check out my next video about adjusting the seat brackets. They need to be bent inward a little so they are inboard and clear of the support struts. I have found that these frames are not all identical in spec. Probably hand made in a minimal jig. My second one is off a bit from the first one I ordered. They are pretty easy to bend a bit though and then they won’t cause any issues.

      @@SoFloBuilds ya I just screwed seats on to the aluminum seat of the inflatable dingy as the frames o am worried about them damaging the tubes tho I do not know much about the Saturns so I just screwed mine boat seats to the aluminum seats they come with the Saturn not Teton to put to much weight on the aluminum floor tho but might change to your s tho I order 2 off Amazon I got 3 boats seat amd mounted in the middle of each aluminum seat so I could get the weight evenly so we will see but I do like your a lot after watching it so I can always change it amd I’m not sure about a trailer yet as we’re I live some idots would walk by and put a hole in it tho so might be better to inflate it amd deflate it but really do like your set up will see how mine goes still waiting to get mine the water but I’m really picky as I paid 2000 thousand for mine so will be really careful when I take it out but again grate video

    Thank you for making this video, I was thinking, normally Saturn suggest to install the bars to join 2 benches together without the bars the seats will flip backward when leaning on it, with your system ( double portable seat stand) how is your experience? are the seats stable? I really like your idea...your comments will be appreciated!

      They don't budge! I've been slammed around in the Intercoastal by Big Wakes with Two people in them and nothing. Even with low pressure they didn't move.

    Nice relaxing day on the water! I have the Saturn hd420, in choppy water, 1 to 2 footers the floor section, where the bow part couples to the 1st aluminum section seems to buckle more than I’d care for…. Do you experience any of this? Maybe I need more air in the keel?

      Thanks for watching! If I end up breaking the boat down for any reason, I'll see about doing a seperate video on the Support Rails. Although I think I can just show a close up picture with them in and it would give you a really good idea. Mine are also loose until I build up air pressure, I believe thats normal.

      @@donaldmartin4620 Boats To Go is local to me here in S FL, and I’ve owned there SD488 as well a few years ago. As a company, they are a value brand. Value doesn’t mean bad, just means giving you a fair product at a fair price. Other brands that I won’t list by name are basically the exact same product with better marketing and 4-5 times the price. I am not sponsored by Saturn in any way, and speak only from the position of what I consider “Fair”. To me it’s unfair to sell an equivalent product for 4 times the price. It’s the way of the world these days. Go to your main Brand grocery store and pay $7 for a jar of Mayo, or go to Walmart and pay $5. It’s the same product, why pay more? These Companies are banking on you won’t take the time to do the research and assume that because it costs so much more, it must be better. PVC boats are cheap and effective, they’re in no way luxury items and should cost as much as a fiberglass boat. At the same time, you have to accept some compromises. Shipping Companies do the best they can to get a very heavy item delivered in one piece. Minor scuffs and such are annoying, but par for the course these days. As long as there’s no significant damage, I’d consider it good to go. Otherwise it should filed as shipping damage and the shipper is responsible for a replacement. I think anyone who has opened a new Saturn can attest to how well they a packaged, and I think that’s why they are able to ship as many boats as they do all over the country without catastrophic damage. Otherwise, all these companies would be out of business.
